Arepa (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈɾepa]) is a type of food made of ground maize dough, originating from the northern region of South America in pre-Colombian times, and is notable primarily in the cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela, but also present in the cuisines of Bolivia and other countries. A South American staple, particularly in Columbia and Venezuela, arepas are stuffed cornmeal cakes that are crispy outside and fluffy inside.

The ingredients needed to make Arepa:
  1. Prepare 2 cups Harina Pan (precooked maize flour)
  2. Make ready 2 cups warm water
  3. Get To taste, salt
  4. Prepare 1 tbsp oil
  5. Make ready Oil for frying

The Arepa is one the most popular foods in Colombia. They're served in almost every home and are the equivalent of tortillas in Mexico and bread in Italy. I ate arepa every day growing up in Colombia! There are different versions of arepas throughout Colombia, every region having its own variation.

Steps to make Arepa:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, add water, oil and salt. Mix well.
  2. Slowly add the flour into the water mixture and knead into a soft dough. The dough will feel moist, it should have moulding consistency.
  3. Divide the dough into 6 equal parts and roll into balls. Place a ball of dough on the palm of your hand and press it down with the palm of your other hand to flatten it. It should be 3/4"thick and 5"- 6" in diameter. Repeat the same with rest of the dough balls.
  4. Heat oil on medium flame and fry the arepas till golden in colour.
  5. Slice the arepa halfway through the side and fill it with fillings of your choice. You can also scrap off some of the dough from the inside to make room for extra fillings. I normally scrap off some of it.

I ate arepa every day growing up in Colombia! There are different versions of arepas throughout Colombia, every region having its own variation. Arepas are cornmeal cakes that originated hundreds of years ago in a region that now makes up Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. Traditionally, they were cooked on a pan called a budare. But they can also be grilled, baked, or fried.
